What is in it

• The verdict page. Your four lines with dates, the same ones the free check shows, on one dated sheet.
• Chargeback script. The exact words card issuers respond to: services not rendered, merchant stopped work on a date, the promised delivery date, the transaction dates. One per payment.
• Demand letter. To the contractor, certified mail, citing your state's deposit statute where one exists (Florida's 30-day refund rule, the one-third caps, New York's escrow rule), with a deadline and what happens after it.
• Licensing board complaint. The narrative and the attachment list for your state's board, written the way boards read them.
• Recovery fund or bond application. Where the state has one: the cover letter, the precondition spelled out, the deadline, and what to attach. Where it doesn't, the page says so and points at small claims.
• Lien-defense letter. To any subcontractor or supplier, with proof of payment, your state's notice rule, and a request for their notice and contract.
• Proof of claim worksheet. Official Form 410 field by field, with the consumer deposit priority ($3,800 for cases filed on or after April 1, 2025) explained and the bar date to watch for.
• Small-claims worksheet. Your state's cap and court, the defendant's legal name, what to bring, and the timeline.
• Finishing-contractor checklist. How to hire the next one so this doesn't happen twice: license, bond, lien waivers, deposit rules, milestone payments.

Questions

Is this legal advice?

No. It describes what each form is and where it goes, and fills it in with what you told us. Whether to send any of it is your call. A lawyer can review the whole kit in a fraction of the time it would take them to draft it.

What if my state has no fund?

Thirty-three states don't. The kit says so plainly and builds the small-claims and bankruptcy paths instead, which are the real paths in those states.

What do I need on hand?

The contract, your payment records, and any letters from the contractor, a subcontractor, or a court. The contract page shows where each number lives.

What if something goes wrong after I pay?
